“The World is Our Egg:” GSP Alumni Inspire Kentucky’s Future Leaders
Written by: Diya Nair and Josiah Self

On Sunday, June 29th, four distinguished alumni of the Governor’s Scholars Program returned to campus to speak with the 2025 scholars. Each brought a unique story, but they all shared one powerful message: make the most of your time at GSP. Through personal anecdotes, professional reflections, and heartfelt advice, the speakers challenged scholars to embrace curiosity, connect with one another, and take initiative in shaping their futures.
Scholars were graced with the presence of Dr. Jill Stratton, Assistant Provost for Academic Support and Community Engagement at Vanderbilt University, affectionately known as the “Dean of Joy.” A dedicated scholar of young adulthood psychology, Dr. Stratton, originally from Mayfield, KY, attended the Governor’s Scholars Program at the University of Kentucky campus in 1984. For her, the program sparked a love for academia, and she has gone on to serve many students in multiple capacities across the nation. Dr. Stratton told students that “the world is our egg,” encouraging them to break out of their shells and explore the world around them when they feel prepared.
Another distinguished guest, Dr. Renee Fister, currently serves as the Associate Provost at Murray State University. With a deep passion for mathematics and science, Dr. Fister has made significant contributions to the field of neuroblastoma research, advancing both understanding and treatment. Throughout her life, she has overcome numerous challenges that have shaped her both personally and professionally. These hardships, which have affected her and her loved ones, have imparted valuable lessons in resilience. Dr. Fister shared these lessons with the attentive scholars, urging them to cultivate these qualities as they pursue their own growth and success.
As the event progressed, Dr. Bryce Meredith captivated the room with stories from his journey as a Primary Care Sports Medicine Specialist. Currently serving his community as a family care doctor, Meredith is also a respected member of the KHSAA Board for Sports Medicine. He graduated as a scholar from Centre College in 2004. Following his time in the program, he went on to study medicine at the University of Pikeville – Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine, ultimately completing his doctorate at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Meredith focused on how his experiences in GSP impacted his life and career in meaningful ways – offering valuable insights and lessons for the scholars to learn from.
Closing out the series was State Senator Jason Howell, whose remarks left a lasting impression. He shared that he encounters fellow scholars almost every day, reinforcing his central message: that GSP was the single most important networking opportunity he’s ever received. Hailing from Murray, Kentucky, Senator Howell emphasized the importance of unity—something he first learned through the program and has seen continually reinforced throughout his career in public service.
Overall, Alumni Day left a lasting impression on the 2025 scholars. While each speaker shared a unique perspective, they all echoed a common message: make the most out of GSP. Not only is GSP a learning experience, it is so much more. It is a chance to connect with others, broaden your thinking, and embrace every opportunity the program offers.
