Scholars Unleash Their Inner Artist
By: Maya Johnston

This past weekend was full of fun events that allowed scholars to participate in a variety of activities. On Saturday, June 28th, scholars had the chance to get creative at Evening With the Arts, hosted in Faculty Hall. There was a range of activities, including tote bag painting, Just Dance, felt banner making, rock painting, cross stitch, finger painting, cookie decorating, and tie dye. Scholars got to choose two activities, each being led by a Residential Advisor (RA).
Each RA was ecstatic to share their artsy activities with the scholars. RA Dylan led Just Dance, where he played popular 2000s music videos for participants to dance along to with friends. Felt banner making, a go-to decoration in the dorms, was led by RA Heather. Many supplies such as felt, markers, scissors, and glue were used to shape the banner and add a personal touch to each individual’s creation. This activity gave scholars the chance to make their own creation, and made them feel very accomplished to take a finished product back to the dorms. Another activity was bouquet-making, led by RA Laney. In this session, scholars were able to learn floral techniques while making bouquets with fake flowers. Scholars said they loved how the bouquets brightened up their dorms, adding a splash of color along with a homey touch to their halls. The tote bag painting session led by RA Uchechi and RA Jackie gave scholars the chance to let their creativity shine. Many scholars chose to tailor their tote bags to the program, painting “Governor’s Scholar Program 2025” on the side, while others painted on simple designs.
The Evening With the Arts was a very successful event, with scholars walking out of Faculty Hall holding on to their newest creations and mementos. Everyone was able to spend time with friends, learn from RAs, and get creative!
