On Monday, July 1st, Get Out was shown as the 4th rendition of the Governor Scholars Program’s Classic Film Series. As Madeline’s personal pick, this film was a total hit with the scholars! This Jordan Peele psychological horror film was an instant success, going on to win numerous Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor. The 2017 film is noted for its blend of social commentary, plot twists, humor, and horror, all jam-packed into a wonderful hour and forty-four minute experience.
The movie stars Daniel Kaluuya as Chris, an African American photographer who is dating Rose (Allison Williams), a white woman. The movie begins with a confusing scene in which a black man is kidnapped, and then cuts to Chris, who is about to go on his way to his girlfriend’s parents’ house. The movie is full of twists and turns from beginning to end, along with numerous symbols and foreshadowing sprinkled throughout.
This film took scholars on an emotional roller coaster, with multiple gasps and eruptions of applause occurring all throughout the movie. Scholars explored themes of cultural appropriation and systematic racism, while discussing alternate endings and their implications.
Scholars thoroughly enjoyed the film, with many noting it to be “the best horror movie” they had ever seen. Many discussions about the symbolism and hidden details followed the showing, with almost every scholar pointing out the moments they had noticed and wanting to hear what they had missed. Out of the thirty scholars who were asked about the movie, twenty-six of them said that Get Out was their favorite movie shown at the Classic Film Series thus far. Out of the previous three, this film was definitely the crowd favorite!
