A Feast For Knowledge
By Maya Johnston

On the morning of Monday, June 30th, scholars anxiously waited in Franklin Hall to sign up for the Intellectual Buffet to be held later that week at 7pm on Wednesday, July 2nd. This event was an opportunity for scholars to learn various lessons from the Governor’s Scholars Program (GSP) faculty and Residential Advisors (RAs). Scholars got to select one Intellectual Buffet session, with each session being held in Faculty Hall for an hour long. Despite the brief sessions, scholars took away valuable information and life lessons from each.
From “Red Flags and Green Flags” with Uchechi to “Invisible Ink” with Liz, scholars learned about a wide range of topics. In the session led by Uchechi, scholars had the chance to get creative by coming up with hypothetical scenarios including red flags and green flags. Ella Pierce thought that this activity caused very interesting discussions to occur in the class. Another scholar, Alivia Rhodes, found this session very beneficial, because Uchechi also covered how to better recognize the signs surrounding red flags in real life situations. Another session was “Money for Life”, taught by faculty member Scott. In this session, scholars learned all about money skills. Scott made money in college the focus of his lesson. He outlined various advice on handling money, such as how to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and the importance of saving money in college. Other sessions included “How To Save a Life”, “Email Educate”, “Outwit, Outlast, Outplay”, and “Playing with Crutches”.
At the end of the night, the Intellectual Buffet had successfully accomplished its goal: to fill up scholars with useful and interesting information. This event also gave scholars the chance to be in a classroom setting with people from outside their typical classes, helping to build the GSP community. Now, scholars are ecstatic for July 19th, when the second Intellectual Buffet of the summer will occur. The catch is that scholars will be leading the sessions about anything and everything they can imagine!
