International Relations: Where Relations Meet Reality
Written by: Mason Asher

International Relations, a Focus Area class led by none other than Lauren Hines, was observed on July 19th, 2025. Lauren Hines is a current realtor, former educator, and 2024 candidate for State Representative. She is more than qualified to educate scholars in International Relations.
The day started out briskly, with a moving testament to the McConnell Scholars Program conducted by R.A. Seth. Scholars listened intently as he discussed grand opportunities for both college admission and beyond. The program is hosted at the McConnell Center and is based upon the three pillars of Leadership, Scholarship, and Service. He went further into detail about the program’s nationally ranked Moot-Court, as it is the only undergraduate team in Kentucky.
As the class progressed, we readied ourselves for a meeting with State Representative Adam Moore. When Rep. Moore joined the video call, students were shocked at his young appearance. Mr. Moore is one of the state’s youngest Representatives. Scholars were shocked further when the found out that he and Lauren were collegiate pals. Rep. Moore continued his speech about his days working with the military as well as his work in Strategic Communications. He served in this position in Somali, Ethiopia, and the village of Jambudi.
His work in politics, however, has been much more recent, with activity occurring as recent as January, 2025. His campaign was started largely by word of mouth, but he has already proven himself more than worthy of the position. Rep. Moore has already passed a bill to better property taxes for veterans, as well as a new research program for biofuel.
As the class time dwindled down, students were given the opportunity to rediscuss the Cold War (last week’s discussion topic), as well the film Oppenheimer. One student noted that the “I am Death,” quote from the film was likely derived from ancient Hindu Literature. Another recounted the minute details and foreshadowing leading up to the end of the film.
