On Saturday, July 5th, Pan’s Labyrinth was the sixth showing in the Classic Film Series. The film received mixed reviews from the scholars with many different interpretations. The film was directed by Guillermo del Toro and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006. At this festival, the film received a 22 minute standing ovation, breaking the record for the longest standing ovation at the festival.
The film stars 11 year old Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) as she is sent to live with her stepfather and mom. The movie combines the harsh truth of the real world along with the magical fantasy of a fairy tale.
After the film was over, the scholars’ conversations portrayed how truly different each and every person viewed the film. The movie dived into interpreting the idea of moral disobedience and the overall topic of good and evil, leaving a lasting impression on the scholars perspective of life.
