Written by: Ella Pierce and Josiah Self

Johnson Theatre erupted with cheers, laughs, and surprises on Friday night, July 11th. . 23 acts took the stage and since then these performances have been the talk of the GSP community. So let’s get into it…who and what were scholars raving about?

The show was kicked off by a performance from Faculty Clay Johnson and Zach Standly showcasing a comedic vocal performance of “Movin’ Right Along” with their own spin adding “(to GSP)”. Scholars were entertained by their rendition of the Muppits performance.

A truly captivating vocal was performed by Jaxon McCubbin and Callie Durham. Singing “Indigo” by Sam Barber, this moving performance had the crowd entranced with their entertaining choreography and their wonderful harmonization.

Next, a crowd roaring performance was led by a group named “Society.” They showcased a performance art entertaining the idea of A Metaphor for Capitalism. This amusing act featured many spontaneous events. It can truly be said that the scholars never knew what was going to happen next.

Subsequently, Marlon Anicete graced the stage with poise and elegance as he presented a heartfelt variation of “When I Was Your Man” by Bruno Mars. The crowd exploded with applause and celebration for their beloved fellow scholar. Undoubtedly, his charisma, iconic singular black glove, and mysterious shades won over the crowd—his performance is sure to go down in GSP history.

“The Nikity Kats” commanded the stage with “A Swampy Skit”—a comedy routine inspired by the DreamWorks cult classic Shrek. Shrek’s hilarious costume and bright green skin left the crowd rolling on the ground while Dragon and Donkey’s situationship and Lord Farquad’s “bob” left the scholars crying with laughter.

Cue the electric guitar—Snoopy the band played the 70’s rock and roll classic, “Free Bird.” Despite some slight technical difficulties, all of the scholars thoroughly enjoyed the skill and taste of Elliot Higginbotham, Caden Wang, and Noah Habash. They indeed brought the house down with this quintessential summer anthem.

Next up, “The Impossible Burgers” smacked cups to the beat of Pitch Perfect’s “When I’m Gone.” Led by Callie Durham, Mary Lee’s “Growth” general studies class came together as one big ole’ happy family and performed this uniting chant. This performance embodied what GSP is all about: community.

One of the most mesmerizing acts was Santiago Villarreal and Caden Wang’s “Violin concerto in B minor.” This sophisticated piece engrossed the audience, leaving everyone GScharmed. Their beautiful unison left Johnson Theatre shocked and hungry for more.

Vaugn Ramirez rounded out this evening of talented performances. Gracefully dancing to “Desperado,” Vaughn wowed the crowd with his skill and left everyone impressed with this week’s showcase.
