On Friday, July 4th, scholars eagerly filled into Winslow Dining Hall, buzzing with excitement for the special Independence Day lunch prepared just for them. Our team was on-site to capture the energy and hear firsthand what scholars thought of the festive feast.
The dining hall offered a variety of patriotic-inspired options to satisfy a wide range of tastes. One station featured Southern favorites: roasted chicken, crispy catfish, and creamy coleslaw. The Simple Servings section catered to allergen-sensitive students offered a hearty beef and potato dish. Nearby, sizzling bacon-topped hamburgers drew a crowd, adding a classic American touch to the holiday spread.
As red, white, and blue–clad scholars found their seats, the room quickly filled with the sounds of laughter, conversation, and clinking cutlery. The overall reception to the meal was positive, with many expressing appreciation for the diverse offerings.
Katie, a scholar from Boone County, offered a candid review.
“These waffle fries look really good, but these veggies look a little soggy. However, this cookie that I’ve eaten half of was really good!”
While some noted a few imperfections, others were thoroughly impressed. Isaac Howard, hailing from Magoffin County, approached the holiday meal with an open mind and a full plate. Isaac was pleasantly surprised with the options available, and gave the lunch a solid seven out of ten stars.
From festive food to high spirits, Winslow Dining Hall delivered a holiday meal that brought scholars together in celebration—proving once again that no matter what, food builds community.
